What size surfboard should a beginner ride?

The single biggest beginner mistake is starting on a board that's too small because it "looks cooler." The truth: bigger and softer means more waves, faster progress, and a lot more fun.

Volume and stability beat style for your first months.

The simple answer

Learn on a soft-top (foamie), 7 to 9 feet long. Soft-tops are stable, forgiving, and safer if the board hits you. Rough sizing by build:

Why bigger is better at first

More length and volume = more flotation = easier paddling and far more stability. You'll catch many more waves, which means more practice standing up โ€” the only thing that actually makes you better. A short, low-volume board punishes every small mistake.

In Bali: just rent a soft-top there โ€” cheaper than flying your own board, and most beginner spots have rentals right on the beach. Pair it with the right beach (see is Bali good for beginners) and you're set.
