The best time of year to surf in Bali

Bali surfs all year — the trick is knowing which coast is firing when. The island has two seasons, and they flip the action from one side of the peninsula to the other.

Same island, two seasons — the wind decides which coast wins.

Dry season (May–September): the west coast fires

This is peak Bali surf. Offshore winds groom the famous Bukit breaks — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin — and Canggu and the west coast are consistent. It's also the busiest and driest time to visit. If you want the postcard waves, come now.

Wet season (October–April): the east coast turns on

The wind swings, so the west goes choppy and the east coast — Nusa Dua, Keramas, Sanur reef — comes alive. There's more rain (usually short afternoon bursts), fewer crowds, and lower prices. Great for intermediate surfers chasing the east-side reefs.

Best windows by level: Beginners — year-round at the sand beaches of Kuta and Canggu (see is Bali good for beginners); calmer in wet season. Intermediate/advanced — May to September for the west-coast reefs.
